Freight trains travelling between Maroona and Maryborough are expected to save up to 40 minutes following a major programme of track and signalling upgrades across Australia’s East-West rail corridor.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is carrying out the works during a 64-hour scheduled shutdown from August 29 to 31, covering 18 sites in Victoria and 12 in South Australia.
The programme follows a year of planning to coordinate crews, construction activities and network access while limiting disruption to freight operators.
Signalling Upgrade Targets Faster Train Movements
A major part of the programme is the replacement of the existing manual, relay-based signalling system at Ararat in western Victoria with modern computer-based signalling.
The new system is expected to streamline train movements and reduce the need for workers to manually set train routes.
Together with other corridor improvements, the signalling upgrade will contribute to journey-time savings of up to 40 minutes between Maroona and Maryborough.
Temporary Speed Restrictions to Be Removed
ARTC will also remove six temporary speed restrictions along the route.
Track and signalling constraints will be addressed to improve the reliability and efficiency of freight movements through Victoria and across state borders.
The upgrades cover sections between Mile End and Serviceton and between Serviceton and Laverton.
For freight operators, higher permitted speeds and fewer operational restrictions should allow goods to move more consistently across the corridor.
Track Maintenance Strengthens Network Reliability
Crews will undertake additional maintenance to prepare the railway for summer and reduce the risk of weather-related disruption.
Works include track geometry correction and ballast undercutting, which are intended to improve track stability and reduce defects.
Extreme heat can affect rail conditions, while flooding and debris can interrupt freight movements.
ARTC said the programme is designed to improve resilience as freight demand on the national network increases.
Culverts Upgraded Against Flood Risk
Further works are scheduled on the Pimba-to-Tarcoola section in South Australia from September 3 to 8.
Five ageing culverts will be replaced with reinforced concrete box culverts to strengthen the railway against flooding and extreme weather.
ARTC said similar improvements at nine other locations along the East-West corridor successfully withstood flooding during 2026.
The latest upgrades are intended to reduce future flood-related disruptions and maintain safer, more reliable freight operations.
East-West Corridor Supports National Freight
The works are being delivered through the Network Investment Program, a joint initiative between ARTC and the Australian Government aimed at strengthening and future-proofing national rail infrastructure.
ARTC said the East-West corridor supports the movement of goods ranging from groceries to heavy manufacturing materials.
By combining signalling modernisation, track maintenance and climate-resilience works, the programme is targeting both shorter journey times and improved reliability across a critical Australian freight route.
