Ningbo Ocean Shipping is expanding its container fleet with up to six new 1,900-TEU feeder vessels designed for China’s coastal and near-sea trades, as the carrier upgrades capacity and improves operating efficiency.

The company has signed a newbuilding agreement with Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, covering four firm vessels and options for two additional ships.
The vessels are scheduled to be delivered in phases between 2028 and 2029.
New Feeder Ships Target Regional Routes
The 1,900-TEU vessels are being developed specifically for domestic coastal services and shorter regional container routes.
Designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute, each vessel will have an overall length of 171.95 metres and a moulded breadth of 27.5 metres.
The design has been optimised for operations at shallow-water ports and in restricted waterways, conditions that are common across parts of Asia’s regional shipping network.
According to Ningbo Ocean Shipping, the vessels are intended to improve fuel economy, cargo capacity and overall operational efficiency.
Energy Efficiency Built Into Vessel Design
The newbuilds will comply with the latest maritime environmental requirements, including the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index and Carbon Intensity Indicator standards.
They will also meet Phase III Energy Efficiency Design Index requirements, strengthening the ships’ environmental performance.
The design reflects the wider maritime industry’s focus on improving vessel efficiency as operators respond to tightening environmental requirements and pressure to reduce fuel consumption.
For feeder and short-sea shipping operations, efficiency improvements can also reduce operating costs across routes that involve frequent port calls and shorter sailing distances.
Fleet Upgrade Supports Operational Efficiency
Ningbo Ocean Shipping said the newbuilding programme aligns with its long-term development strategy and current operational requirements.
The company expects the additional vessels to improve its fleet structure and strengthen overall operating efficiency.
Feeder vessels play an important role in regional container networks by connecting smaller ports with larger shipping hubs and mainline services.
Adding new capacity can therefore support greater flexibility across domestic and regional trade routes while allowing operators to replace or supplement older tonnage with more efficient vessels.
Chinese Shipbuilding Supports Fleet Expansion
The order also adds to continued newbuilding activity at Chinese shipyards.
Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry is part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, while the vessel design was developed by Shanghai-based SDARI.
China remains a major centre for container vessel construction, supported by a large domestic shipbuilding ecosystem covering shipyards, marine equipment suppliers and naval architecture.
The Ningbo Ocean order demonstrates continued demand for specialised feeder vessels alongside the larger container ships being deployed on global trade routes.
Ningbo Ocean Broadens Maritime Operations
The fleet investment comes as Ningbo Ocean Shipping also expands into new shipping segments.
Earlier in August 2026, the carrier launched its first roll-on/roll-off service to Europe, marking its entry into international ro-ro transportation.
The new container vessels will strengthen the company’s core short-sea shipping operations while supporting a wider strategy of fleet expansion and service diversification.
With deliveries beginning in 2028, the project will add more efficient feeder capacity to China’s coastal shipping network and strengthen Ningbo Ocean Shipping’s position in regional container transportation.
