Shitara identified surface-mount technology equipment, semiconductor backend equipment and related factory automation systems as potential areas for growth.
Demand for these technologies is expected to increase as India builds new semiconductor fabrication, assembly, testing and electronics manufacturing capacity.
The expansion of the country’s semiconductor sector is also creating opportunities for equipment suppliers supporting production processes further along the chip manufacturing value chain.
Local Manufacturing Under Consideration
Yamaha is evaluating whether to manufacture industrial equipment locally in India.
One option would be to establish its own production base, while another would involve working with an Indian partner to import and distribute Yamaha products.
A local manufacturing operation could give Yamaha a stronger position within India’s industrial automation and semiconductor supply chains while allowing it to respond more closely to domestic customer requirements.
Shitara said India also has the potential to become a location where products and technologies are developed and tested before being introduced into other international markets.
India Expands Semiconductor Investment
Yamaha’s interest comes as India increases support for domestic semiconductor manufacturing.
Under the next phase of the country’s semiconductor strategy, Semicon 2.0, the government plans an outlay of ₹1.27 lakh crore to strengthen capabilities across the semiconductor ecosystem.
The programme is expected to support areas including chip design, semiconductor manufacturing equipment and materials, wafer fabrication, assembly and testing, research and development, and workforce development.
India has approved 12 semiconductor manufacturing units with cumulative investment exceeding ₹1.64 lakh crore.
The projects are intended to strengthen domestic production while reducing reliance on imported semiconductor components and technologies.
Equipment Demand Grows With New Factories
The expansion of semiconductor and electronics manufacturing is expected to increase demand for industrial equipment across India.
New production facilities require robotics, automated handling systems, SMT equipment and semiconductor backend technologies to support manufacturing and assembly operations.
For equipment suppliers such as Yamaha, this creates opportunities beyond the company’s established automotive business.
The company’s existing Gurugram robotics facility gives it an initial foothold as it evaluates whether to expand further into local manufacturing and semiconductor-related equipment.
