Surging global demand for AI hardware helped lift manufacturing activity across much of Asia in August, with factories in China, Japan and South Korea expanding on strong orders for semiconductors, computers and other AI-related products.
Quick Skim
Private manufacturing surveys showed the AI and semiconductor cycle continuing to support export-oriented economies across the region, even as manufacturers faced higher costs and uncertainty linked to the prolonged Middle East conflict.
Factory activity also expanded in Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines, while Indonesia slipped back into contraction and India recorded its slowest manufacturing growth in five years.
China Manufacturing Returns to Stronger Growth
China’s RatingDog General Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 51.5 in August from 50.9 in July, remaining above the 50-point level that separates expansion from contraction.
The reading also exceeded the 51.0 forecast in a Reuters poll.
Strong foreign demand helped improve momentum in parts of China’s industrial sector, with AI-related products providing support to manufacturers despite weakness elsewhere in the economy.
However, China’s official factory survey remained in contraction territory, indicating that the broader manufacturing recovery remains uneven.
Japan Manufacturing Gains Momentum
Japan’s manufacturing sector recorded another month of expansion as demand for semiconductors and AI-related products strengthened.
The S&P Global Japan Manufacturing PMI increased to 54.9 in August from 54.5 in July, reaching its highest level since April and marking an eighth consecutive month of growth.
New business expanded at its fastest pace since January 2018, providing manufacturers with stronger order pipelines.
S&P Global Market Intelligence said demand linked to AI-related sectors continued to support the outlook for Japanese manufacturing.
South Korea Extends Manufacturing Expansion
South Korea remained in expansion for a ninth consecutive month.
Its manufacturing PMI eased to 52.3 in August from 53.1 in July, but remained comfortably above the 50-point threshold.
Strong export demand continued to support production, particularly across semiconductors and other technology-related products.
Separate data showed South Korean exports rose 68.7% year on year in August, extending their expansion to a 15th consecutive month.
S&P Global Market Intelligence said manufacturers were continuing to benefit from the current AI and semiconductor investment cycle.
Taiwan, Malaysia and Philippines Remain in Expansion
Manufacturing activity also expanded across several other Asian economies.
Taiwan’s PMI stood at 54.7 in August, slightly below 55.1 in July but still indicating strong factory growth.
Malaysia remained marginally in expansion territory, with its PMI easing to 50.2 from 50.7.
The Philippines posted one of the strongest improvements in the region, with its manufacturing PMI jumping to 54.9 from 51.8 in July.
The figures show that the current electronics and technology cycle is extending beyond Northeast Asia into parts of Southeast Asia.
Indonesia Slips Back Into Contraction
Indonesia moved in the opposite direction.
Its manufacturing PMI fell to 49.8 in August from 50.2 in July, pushing factory activity back below the level associated with expansion.
The result highlights the uneven impact of the AI-driven manufacturing cycle across Asia, with economies more closely tied to semiconductor and electronics exports benefiting more strongly.
India Factory Growth Slows Sharply
India continued to expand, but at its weakest pace in five years.
Weak demand weighed on manufacturing activity and contributed to the first decline in factory employment in more than two years, according to the survey data.
The slowdown contrasts with stronger momentum across several East Asian manufacturing economies benefiting directly from global technology and semiconductor demand.
AI Cycle Supports Asia’s Manufacturing Outlook
August’s manufacturing data shows how strongly AI infrastructure investment is influencing industrial activity across Asia.
Demand for chips, computers, networking equipment and other technology hardware is supporting production and exports across major manufacturing economies including China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
The trend is also supporting selected Southeast Asian markets, although conditions remain uneven across the region.
At the same time, manufacturers continue to face risks from geopolitical tensions and rising input costs, meaning the durability of the current expansion will depend partly on whether global AI and semiconductor investment remains strong.
For now, however, the AI and semiconductor cycle is providing one of the clearest sources of growth for Asia’s manufacturing sector.
