Sydney Metro West has received its first major rail delivery at Sydney Olympic Park, marking another construction milestone as work progresses towards track installation across the new underground metro line.

A total of 5,316 tonnes of rail has been transported into the 27-metre-deep station box at Sydney Olympic Park, where crews are preparing the steel before it is moved into the project’s twin tunnels.
More Than 4,000 Rail Sections Lowered Underground
Crews used a precision lifting process to lower 4,376 individual steel rail sections, each measuring 20 metres, from ground level to the future station floor.
A team of 20 workers will spend around three months welding the sections together into 120-metre lengths.
The completed sections will then be moved progressively into the tunnels using a specialised road-rail excavator and stored until track installation begins.
John Holland Delivers Linewide Works
The rail preparation forms part of Sydney Metro West’s Linewide programme, being delivered by John Holland.
The package covers the fit-out of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and stations, as well as operational facilities and rail systems across the entire alignment.
The work represents the transition from major tunnelling and civil construction towards installation of the infrastructure required to operate the future metro network.
60 Kilometres of Track Planned
Around 60 kilometres of track will eventually be installed across Sydney Metro West’s twin tunnels and the Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility.
Additional rail will also be delivered for approximately nine kilometres of service track connecting the main metro alignment with the Clyde maintenance facility.
The service connection will support train movements between the passenger network and the facility used for stabling and maintenance operations.
Track Installation to Begin in 2027
Once the rail has been stored inside the tunnels, construction crews will begin preparing the concrete track base.
Electrical and mechanical fit-out works are scheduled to progress through the remainder of 2026, with track installation expected to begin in the first half of 2027.
The sequence will progressively transform the completed tunnels into an operational railway environment as rail systems, power infrastructure and other equipment are installed.
Sydney Metro West Moves Into Rail Systems Phase
The arrival of the first rail represents a significant step in Sydney Metro West’s construction programme.
With thousands of tonnes of steel now being prepared underground, work is moving further into the rail systems and infrastructure stage required before testing and eventual passenger operations can begin.
The project highlights the scale of coordination involved in major metro developments, where tunnelling, station construction, track installation, electrical systems and maintenance infrastructure must be delivered as an integrated network.
