Micron Technology has opened a new semiconductor facility in Tainan after converting an existing plant in just 6.5 months, expanding its Taiwan manufacturing network as demand for memory chips used in AI systems continues to grow.

The US semiconductor manufacturer acquired the building and equipment from AU Optronics for NT$7.4 billion (US$233.3 million) in August 2024. The site will support wafer testing for Micron’s production operations in Taichung and Taoyuan.
Tainan Facility Adds Wafer Testing Capacity
The new operation includes facilities for wafer testing as well as a cleanroom capable of testing complete wafer discs.
Tainan Deputy Mayor Chao Ching-hui said Micron upgraded the former facility into a modern semiconductor manufacturing site within 6.5 months.
The conversion gives Micron additional capacity within an existing industrial facility rather than requiring an entirely new site to be constructed.
It also strengthens Tainan’s role within Taiwan’s wider semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
AI Memory Demand Drives Capacity Expansion
Micron’s Tainan investment forms part of a broader global capacity expansion aimed at meeting increasing demand for memory products associated with artificial intelligence.
AI servers and data centres require large volumes of advanced memory alongside processors, increasing demand across the semiconductor supply chain.
Micron is one of the major producers of DRAM and NAND memory technologies used across data centres, computing and other digital infrastructure.
The company has invested more than NT$1.4 trillion in Taiwan over the past three decades and now employs more than 15,000 people in the market.
Another Micron Fab Planned for 2027
Micron’s Taiwan manufacturing footprint is set to expand further.
A new wafer fabrication facility in Miaoli is expected to begin production in 2027, adding further semiconductor capacity as the company responds to long-term demand.
The Tainan, Taichung, Taoyuan and future Miaoli operations give Micron a distributed manufacturing network across Taiwan covering different stages of semiconductor production and testing.
Taiwan Remains Strategic Manufacturing Base
Micron chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra said Taiwan remains one of the company’s largest partners and an important part of its global manufacturing operations.
Micron began operating in Taiwan around three decades ago with a small office before building a much larger semiconductor manufacturing presence.
The company’s latest expansion comes as Taiwan continues to attract investment across advanced logic, memory, packaging, testing and semiconductor equipment.
