Paradip Port Designated Mega Port as Odisha Advances Maritime Economy
Paradip Port becomes the only Mega Port on India’s east coast, marking Odisha’s enhanced role in maritime trade and infrastructure development.
Paradip Port has been designated a ‘Mega Port’ under the Indian Ports Act, 2025, recognising Odisha’s growing influence in India’s maritime sector, according to the state’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The designation sets Paradip apart as the sole Mega Port on the eastern coast, highlighting its strategic role in trade and connectivity.
Paradip Achieves Mega Port Status Amid Strategic Expansion
The Chief Minister noted that Paradip Port’s elevated status reflects its expanding cargo handling capacity, robust infrastructure, and operational capabilities. The Port functions as a key hub for bulk commodities including coal, iron ore, fertilisers, and crude oil, supporting logistical needs across eastern and central India.
Alongside Paradip, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has granted Mega Port status to three other ports: Deendayal Port (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva), and Mundra Port. Paradip is unique among these as the only eastern coast port in the category.
Implications for Odisha’s Industrial Growth and Trade
According to CM Majhi, the designation is expected to enhance Odisha’s capacity to attract investment, optimise logistics, and stimulate economic opportunities. The recognition aligns with the state’s ambition to emerge as a central hub for trade, maritime growth, and industrial development.
Majhi expressed appreciation for the central government’s support under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, describing the status as a milestone in Odisha’s economic progress.
Moving forward, Paradip Port’s upgraded status is likely to increase its role in facilitating supply chain efficiencies and supporting industrial expansion in the region.
