PLDT Expands International Connectivity as Philippines Targets AI Infrastructure Growth
PLDT is advancing its global network capacity to capture opportunities from Asia’s growing AI and cloud services market.
PLDT Inc., via its international division PLDT Global, is expanding its subsea cable and cross-border network capacity to support Asia’s growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, aiming to boost the Philippines’ role in the regional digital ecosystem.
PLDT Targets Rising Demand from Hyperscalers and Cloud Providers
PLDT Global is utilising its involvement in the Asia Direct Cable (ADC) system, which connects key Asian economies with increased network bandwidth and alternative international data routes. This infrastructure investment addresses the surging need for reliable global connectivity driven by expanding cloud services, AI applications, and digital platforms.
Albert V. Villa-Real, president and CEO of PLDT Global, noted that the company is prioritising infrastructure enhancements and partnerships to support customers’ digital transformation across markets.
The heightened demand is reflected in PLDT Global’s financial performance, with a 30% revenue increase year-on-year in the first half of 2026, attributed to growing bandwidth and related infrastructure requirements from hyperscalers, international carriers and digital platform operators.
Implications for the Philippines’ Digital Infrastructure Sector
The Philippines seeks to attract more technology investments by expanding its international bandwidth capacity, positioning itself amid competition from established regional digital hubs. Enhanced connectivity infrastructure is essential for the country to integrate into Asia-Pacific’s rapidly scaling AI and cloud computing markets.
This development is likely to influence production and supply chain optimisation for industries relying on AI, while reinforcing the need for skilled workforce and robust cybersecurity measures as digital platforms proliferate.
PLDT’s continued infrastructure investment and expansion in Asia-Pacific will be a key indicator of the Philippines’ evolving capacity to support global AI infrastructure demands.
