Engineer Le Ha Nam Develops Digital Solutions Generating Billions for Da Nang Port
Engineer Le Ha Nam's in-house digital innovations at Da Nang Port have delivered substantial cost savings and operational improvements, advancing port automation.
Engineer Le Ha Nam, a specialist at Da Nang Port’s IT Department, has developed digital devices and systems that have contributed billions of dong in savings and operational efficiencies, supporting the port’s digital transformation efforts.
In-House Devices Meet Port Operational Challenges
Le Ha Nam designed a custom electronic device for internal tractor trucks (eTractor) to withstand the harsh port environment, replacing previously imported equipment. He noted that commercially available solutions were inadequate due to vibration and salt exposure, and generic devices were unsuitable. His team developed proprietary circuit boards, hardware, and software to industrial specifications. This initiative has reduced equipment replacement costs by approximately 4 to 4.5 billion VND over a three-year investment lifecycle.
Building on this, he created an AI-powered container positioning system (ECBS) to precisely align vehicles under container gantry cranes. The system automates the process historically reliant on manual signalling, improving safety and accuracy. The company-installed system has saved about 1.5 billion VND per gantry crane. With the system deployed on four cranes, there are plans to complete installation on the remaining fourteen.
Industry Recognition and Impact on Port Operations
Le Ha Nam’s work is part of an ongoing “Excellent Worker, Creative Worker” movement promoted by the Da Nang Port Trade Union and supported by the Innovation Council. According to Trade Union Chairman Le Tan Minh, these innovations significantly enhance labour productivity, ship turnaround times, and goods delivery schedules.
Le Tan Minh highlighted that Da Nang Port is a pioneer within the Vietnam Maritime Corporation in successfully applying AI for automated vehicle alignment, setting a model that other ports are adopting. The Trade Union’s role in fostering a culture of innovation and responsibility has been instrumental.
Engineer Le Ha Nam has received multiple awards recognising his contributions, including the Innovation Award from the Da Nang City People’s Committee and a Certificate of Merit from the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.
Moving forward, the port plans to expand deployment of these digital systems across its container cranes, further integrating AI solutions to optimise operations and improve safety.
