$880 Million Parramatta Metro Contract Awarded to Gamuda-MTR Consortium

A consortium led by Gamuda Engineering has secured an A$880 million contract to design and build Parramatta Metro Station and its surrounding precinct, advancing the next construction phase of Sydney Metro West.

The consortium, comprising Gamuda Australia and MTR Corporation, will also deliver developments above and around the station, including about 470 homes, 500 student accommodation units, commercial space and a hotel in Parramatta CBD.

Station Precinct Combines Transport and Urban Development

The planned development will integrate the new metro station with residential, commercial and public spaces.

Current plans include a 29-storey commercial office tower, a 24-storey student accommodation building with 500 units, an eight-storey hotel and a build-to-rent residential tower.

The proposal represents a significant expansion from the earlier concept plan, which included only 111 new homes.

Final building uses and designs remain subject to detailed design, planning approval and community consultation.

New Public Space to Connect Parramatta CBD

A landscaped park will be created between Church, Macquarie and George Streets as part of the future Civic Link.

The area is planned to connect with the Parramatta River foreshore and the future Powerhouse Museum, while pedestrian routes will link the precinct with existing rail, light rail and bus services.

The integration is intended to make the metro station a broader transport and urban-development hub rather than a standalone rail facility.

Construction to Begin in 2027

Station construction is scheduled to start in mid-2027, with completion targeted in time for the opening of Sydney Metro West in 2032.

The contract award follows the completion of major excavation and tunnelling works at Parramatta under the project’s Western Tunnelling Package.

With the station box and tunnelling completed, construction is now moving towards the station, building structures and surrounding precinct.

Metro West Targets 20-Minute CBD Connection

The new Parramatta station will form part of Sydney Metro West, providing a rapid connection between Parramatta and Sydney CBD.

The New South Wales government expects the journey between the two centres to take around 20 minutes once services begin.

The project is also being used to support higher-density development around public transport infrastructure as Sydney responds to housing and population growth.

Transport Investment Drives Wider Precinct Development

The Parramatta contract highlights the growing integration of major transport projects with residential and commercial development.

Rather than limiting investment to rail infrastructure, the project combines the metro station with housing, student accommodation, offices, hospitality and public space.

For Sydney Metro West, the A$880 million award marks the transition from tunnelling into the next stage of station and precinct construction ahead of the planned 2032 opening.
