Volkswagen is exploring a strategic partnership with India’s JSW Group to expand its vehicle portfolio, increase local sourcing and strengthen manufacturing in the world’s third-largest car market.
Quick Skim
The proposed collaboration comes as the German automaker looks to improve competitiveness and profitability in India, where it has operated for more than two decades but holds a market share of around 2%.
Partnership Could Include Joint Control
Volkswagen said discussions with JSW could lead to a two-party partnership with joint control, clearly defined operational roles and governance arrangements designed to speed up decision-making.
The companies are also examining ways to share vehicle platforms and expand production capacity in India.
No final structure or investment value for the potential partnership has been announced.
Local Sourcing Becomes a Key Focus
Increasing localisation is expected to be one of the main objectives of the proposed deal.
Volkswagen and JSW are exploring opportunities to source more components domestically, which could reduce reliance on imports and strengthen links with India’s automotive supplier network.
Greater localisation could also help Volkswagen improve production economics in a market where vehicle manufacturers face strong price competition and increasingly established domestic supply chains.
JSW Expands Automotive Presence
JSW Group entered India’s passenger vehicle industry in 2023 through JSW MG Motor India, its joint venture with China’s SAIC Motor.
The potential Volkswagen partnership would further expand the conglomerate’s role in automotive manufacturing and create another link between its industrial businesses and India’s growing vehicle market.
For Volkswagen, working with an established Indian industrial group could provide additional local manufacturing and market expertise as it seeks to scale its operations.
Skoda Leads Volkswagen’s India Operations
India has become an increasingly important growth market for Volkswagen as the group looks to diversify beyond Europe.
Skoda Auto currently leads Volkswagen Group’s operations in India, overseeing the group’s local strategy and manufacturing activities.
Despite its long presence in the country, Volkswagen has struggled to build significant market share, increasing pressure on the group to find a more competitive operating model.
India Strategy Comes Amid Wider Cost Pressure
Volkswagen is also facing pressure globally to reduce costs and improve competitiveness as Chinese automakers expand in Europe and demand remains weak in China.
In India, the automaker is separately challenging a US$1.4 billion tax demand issued by authorities in 2024 over alleged import-duty avoidance. Volkswagen has said it complied with Indian laws, and the case remains before the courts.
The potential JSW partnership therefore comes as Volkswagen reassesses how it manufactures, sources and sells vehicles across one of Asia’s largest automotive markets.
Local Manufacturing Could Shape Volkswagen’s Next India Phase
A partnership with JSW could give Volkswagen a more locally integrated production model built around domestic sourcing, shared vehicle platforms and additional manufacturing capacity.
For India’s automotive industry, the discussions also reflect the growing importance of local manufacturing partnerships as global carmakers compete for market share while managing production costs and supply-chain requirements.
If an agreement is reached, the collaboration could mark a significant next step in Volkswagen’s efforts to establish a stronger manufacturing footprint in India.
