Fujifilm and Tata Electronics Invest Rs. 800 Crore in Gujarat Semiconductor Materials Plant
Fujifilm will invest Rs. 800 crore in a semiconductor materials plant at Dholera with Tata Electronics to support India’s chip fabrication ecosystem.
Fujifilm is investing approximately Rs. 800 crore in a semiconductor materials manufacturing facility in Gujarat’s Dholera Special Investment Region as part of a strategic collaboration with Tata Electronics to bolster India’s domestic semiconductor materials capabilities. The partnership aims to reduce reliance on imported high-purity chemicals critical for chip fabrication by localising development and production.
Collaboration Focuses on Semiconductor Materials Ecosystem
Fujifilm and Tata Electronics have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop and supply advanced semiconductor materials for Tata Electronics’ planned 300 mm semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera. The fab, backed by a total investment of Rs. 91,000 crore, will produce chips using technology nodes from 28nm to 110nm and target sectors such as automotive, consumer electronics, computing, wireless communications and artificial intelligence.
Under the agreement, Fujifilm will contribute its technology, quality assurance, and manufacturing process expertise to collaborate with Indian chemical manufacturers. This will assist in cultivating local capabilities for producing high-purity chemicals including photoresists, CMP slurries, post-CMP cleaners, thin films, photosensitive insulating materials, and other semiconductor process chemicals.
Implications for India’s Semiconductor Manufacturing
According to Tata Electronics’ CEO and MD Randhir Thakur, the partnership enhances supply chain resilience for their Dholera fab and accelerates the development of a robust semiconductor ecosystem in India. Fujifilm’s President Teiichi Goto noted the venture aligns with India’s growing semiconductor market and will support the country’s ambition to become a significant global semiconductor hub.
The Dholera facility, under rapid construction, will benefit from localising semiconductor materials supply, which is essential for maintaining production continuity and supporting wider ecosystem growth including assembly, testing, and specialised materials supply.
Fujifilm’s investment broadens its semiconductor materials footprint in India, complementing its global manufacturing and R&D network. The plant’s phased rollout aims to secure stable supply chains for high-purity semiconductor chemicals necessary throughout the fabrication process.
Further updates regarding progress of the Dholera fab and associated ecosystem partnerships like this Fujifilm collaboration will be closely monitored as India advances its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
