Australian Government Seeks Partners for High-Speed Rail Manufacturing Facility

The Australian Government has initiated a procurement process to develop an Advanced Manufacturing Facility (AMF) that will support construction of the high-speed rail line between Newcastle and Sydney. The High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA) has called for expressions of interest from organisations with expertise in advanced manufacturing and precision engineering to help design and operate the facility.

AMF to Produce Rail Components and Support Supply Chains

The AMF will manufacture the majority of the railway’s construction components within a controlled environment, emphasising quality, consistency, and waste reduction. According to HSRA, the facility will also promote safer workplaces and improve cost and delivery certainty.

In addition to manufacturing, the AMF aims to strengthen domestic supply chains and develop skills that are expected to benefit other Australian infrastructure and manufacturing sectors. The HSRA highlighted that the facility could provide new employment opportunities, particularly in regions like the Hunter Valley that are experiencing workforce changes due to the ongoing energy transition.

Land Search and Next Steps

HSRA is currently searching for suitable land near the proposed rail corridor to host the AMF. The expressions of interest process seeks partners who bring demonstrated experience with proven technologies and practical methods to enhance productivity in rail manufacturing.

The AMF forms part of the project’s Development Phase, culminating in an investment decision by the Australian Government on the Newcastle to Sydney High Speed Rail. The facility’s role in the broader high-speed rail programme is critical to optimising production and supply chain operations for the line’s construction.
