Samsung Develops Dedicated Robotics Team to Automate Semiconductor Manufacturing
Samsung has formed a specialised team to develop robotic automation solutions aimed at improving operational efficiency in its semiconductor fabrication plants.
Samsung Electronics has established a dedicated team within its semiconductor division in South Korea to develop robots tailored for semiconductor manufacturing, aiming to enhance automation and operational efficiency in its chip fabrication facilities.
Quick Skim
Team Focused on AI-Driven Process Innovation
According to Korean media reports, the new team operates under Samsung’s Global Manufacturing & Infra Technology unit within the semiconductor division. The team, called “AX/PI,” is tasked with designing and implementing robotics solutions specifically for semiconductor fabs. The acronym AX refers to “AI transformation,” while PI stands for “process innovation.”
The team comprises many engineers and researchers who previously worked at Samsung’s Equipment Technology Research Institute. This group had been dispersed across various technology units following a reorganisation in 2024 but has now been consolidated under this robotics initiative.
Initial Automation Targets Equipment Maintenance
Development efforts are currently in the early stages. Samsung is focusing on robotic routes, workspace configuration, and specifications for parts storage within fabs. The first application of robotics is expected in the area of equipment maintenance, which today relies heavily on on-site engineers and contracted personnel.
Robotics Central to Samsung’s Manufacturing Strategy
According to Samsung, deploying robotics for fab automation forms a key component of its strategy to improve manufacturing efficiency. The move is expected to reduce reliance on manual labour in critical maintenance tasks, potentially accelerating turnaround times and improving operational safety.
Opportunities Beyond Samsung’s Own Fabs
In addition to enhancing its own production facilities, Samsung sees commercial potential in offering its robotics solutions to other semiconductor manufacturers. This aligns with broader industry trends towards increased automation and digital transformation in chip fabrication.
Implications for Semiconductor Operations in Asia-Pacific
Samsung’s emphasis on automation through robotics reflects a wider push in the Asia-Pacific semiconductor sector to optimise manufacturing processes amid increasing demand and supply chain complexity. For engineers and operations managers, the integration of robotics could mean adjustments in workforce roles and maintenance schedules, alongside greater use of AI-driven diagnostics and predictive maintenance tools.
Looking Ahead
Samsung’s ongoing development of robotics for semiconductor fabs is set to evolve as the company refines functional specifications and tests pilot deployments. Future announcements are likely to cover specific robotic systems and wider adoption plans across Samsung’s global manufacturing network.
