HD Hyundai Delivers First Containership With Hybrid Lashing-Free Technology
HD Hyundai has delivered a 13,000 teu containership with hybrid lashing-free technology to a French operator, reducing manual container securing and increasing deck cargo capacity.
South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai has delivered the world’s first containership employing hybrid lashing-free technology, which eliminates the need for manual securing of containers on board. The 13,000 teu vessel was handed over to a French shipping company and incorporates systems to prevent cargo loss and improve logistics efficiency.
Lashing-Free System Increases Safety and Capacity
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries developed and tested all components of the lashing-free system independently, while HD Hyundai Samho managed the detailed design and construction of the vessel. The technology removes the traditional method where workers secure containers using lashing equipment, enhancing safety by reducing manual labour on deck.
The design allows the containership to carry over 10% more cargo weight on deck compared to conventional vessels of the same size. The system also ensures stable container support in adverse sea conditions, including rough seas and strong winds.
Technology Development and Future Applications
A next-generation lashing-free system with weathertight features is currently under development. HD Hyundai plans to extend this container securing technology to small- and medium-sized vessels to broaden its operational use.
According to Hongryeul Ryu, senior executive vice president and chief technology officer at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, the company intends to expand the application of this technology across vessel classes.
The hybrid lashing-free system was introduced during the International Maritime Organization’s 10th session of the Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers in 2024.
