Shell Indonesia Opens Grease Manufacturing Plant to Support Industrial Growth
Shell has inaugurated a grease manufacturing plant in Indonesia with 12 kilotonnes yearly capacity, aiming to boost local supply and industrial sector needs.
Shell Indonesia has inaugurated a new Grease Manufacturing Plant (GMP) in Bekasi to increase local production capacity and support Indonesia’s expanding industrial sectors. The facility adds to Shell’s existing lubricant oil blending operations and has an annual output capacity of up to 12 kilotonnes.
Plant Supports Industrial and Economic Development
Shell’s Global Executive Vice President of Lubricants, Jason Wong, stated the new plant reflects confidence in Indonesia’s growth prospects and will strengthen supply resilience by bringing manufacturing closer to customers. The plant will produce Shell Gadus grease products, utilised widely in bearings, gears, and other equipment requiring reliable lubrication.
Indonesia’s Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, welcomed the investment as a contributor to broadening the national manufacturing base. He highlighted its potential to support sectors including manufacturing, mining, transportation, pulp and paper, steel, power generation, construction, and smelting. The minister underscored the strategic goal of positioning Indonesia as a regional grease manufacturing hub with strong national industry linkages that generate multiplier economic effects.
Technology and Capacity to Meet Diverse Sector Needs
The GMP is equipped with modern technologies, including a contact reactor that enhances production agility and efficiency. It can manufacture grease in several packaging formats such as drums, pails, and fluid bags, catering to varied customer requirements across multiple industries.
According to the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, the facility is expected to evolve beyond domestic supply to become part of Shell’s regional production network, thereby increasing Indonesia’s role in global lubricant manufacturing.
This development highlights a focus on reinforcing local manufacturing capabilities and sustaining industrial operations amidst Asia-Pacific’s growing demand for reliable lubrication products.
